Upright cards lean toward yes and reversed cards toward no, but the card's own meaning matters more than its direction: The Tower upright is hardly an encouraging yes, and the Star reversed is a no that still carries hope.

A worked example

Asked "Should I apply for the promotion?", the Knight of Wands upright — a yes card in the table below — says yes with a warning attached: go for it energetically, but prepare properly rather than rushing in. The same card reversed would suggest not yet — enthusiasm without a plan.

Where it comes from

Single-card answers are as old as cartomancy itself, but the yes-or-no convention — upright for yes, reversed for no, with some cards treated as "maybe" — is a modern shorthand popularized by tarot books and websites rather than a historical method.

Variations

Some readers draw three cards and count uprights against reversals; others class cards by meaning — Aces and the Sun as yes, the Tower and Ten of Swords as no, the Moon and Two of Swords as not yet.
