Human Design

Five types, seven authorities and twelve profiles — and a straight account of where the system came from.

Manifestor

Built to initiate — the only type designed to start things without waiting.

Generator

Built to sustain — consistent life force energy for work that genuinely engages you.

Manifesting Generator

A hybrid — responsive like a Generator but able to move fast and skip steps.

StrategyWait to respond, then inform
Signature / not-selfSatisfaction and peace · Frustration and anger

Projector

Built to guide — able to see how other people work, without the energy to sustain their pace.

StrategyWait for the invitation
Signature / not-selfSuccess · Bitterness

Reflector

Entirely open — a mirror of the environment rather than a fixed pattern.

StrategyWait a full lunar cycle
Signature / not-selfSurprise · Disappointment

The seven authorities

How a decision is meant to be made, once the strategy has been followed.

Emotional (Solar Plexus) no truth in the moment — wait out the emotional wave before deciding
Sacral the gut response in the instant — a sound rather than a thought
Splenic instant intuition, spoken once and quietly; it does not repeat itself
Ego (Heart) what you genuinely have the willpower for, not what you should want
Self-Projected hearing your own voice — talk it out loud to someone who will not advise
Mental (Environmental) discussion with trusted people, in the right physical environment
Lunar a full 29-day cycle before any major decision — Reflectors only

The twelve profiles

Human Design profiles
ProfileMeaning
1/3Investigator / Martyr — needs a solid foundation, learns by trial and error
1/4Investigator / Opportunist — research combined with a strong personal network
2/4Hermit / Opportunist — natural talent that needs calling out of hiding
2/5Hermit / Heretic — reclusive but repeatedly projected onto as a solution
3/5Martyr / Heretic — learns by breaking things, then teaches what broke
3/6Martyr / Role Model — trial and error early, becomes a guide later
4/6Opportunist / Role Model — network-driven, grows into authority
4/1Opportunist / Investigator — a fixed life direction shared through relationships
5/1Heretic / Investigator — expected to solve things, needs the research to back it
5/2Heretic / Hermit — called on constantly, needs to withdraw to recover
6/2Role Model / Hermit — three life phases: experiment, retreat, emerge
6/3Role Model / Martyr — the same three phases with more upheaval in each

Why there is no calculator here

A Human Design chart needs planetary positions at two moments: your birth, and the point 88 solar degrees earlier — roughly three months before. That requires a proper ephemeris, and an approximation would land people in the wrong type.

Type determines the entire strategy in this system, so getting it wrong makes everything downstream wrong. Better to explain the types accurately than to guess yours and sound confident about it.

Where it came from

Human Design was described in 1987 by Alan Krakower, who took the name Ra Uru Hu and said he received the system over eight days on Ibiza. It combines four existing systems: the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching, astrological positions, the kabbalistic Tree of Life and the Hindu chakra model.

That is worth stating plainly, because Human Design is often presented with the authority of something ancient. The components are old; the synthesis is from 1987 and has no evidential basis beyond the account of one man.

What it does offer is a specific and unusually actionable vocabulary — "wait to respond" and "inform before acting" are concrete instructions, which is more than most personality systems manage.
