The lines are long and the dots sit close together: every mansion sees short and long passes. Averaged over the 21 years, Rohini comes out longest at 24.63 hours and Anuradha shortest at 23.97, a gap of only 2.8%. The highlighted row, Rohini, is where the Moon is today.

That small gap is a leftover of the window, not a property of the mansions. The Moon’s apogee, where it moves slowest, circles the zodiac every 8.85 years, so the long stays wander from one mansion to the next and the ranking reshuffles each decade. How the system is built

Western astrology cuts the sky by the Sun: twelve signs of 30°, each lasting about a month. The nakshatra system cuts the same circle by the Moon: 27 mansions of 13°20′, each lasting about a day. Neither is a subdivision of the other, and the two do not line up — 27 does not divide into 12.

The number 27 comes from the sidereal month. The Moon returns to the same star in 27.32 days, so 27 stalls of roughly one day each tile the circle almost exactly. Each mansion then splits into four padas of 3°20′, giving 108 divisions in total — the same 108 that recurs throughout Indian tradition.

What the classifications mean

Each nakshatra carries a ruling planet and four traditional labels used in matching and timing. Only the first has a mechanical consequence; the rest are recorded in the classical texts, not measured, and we label them as such:

  • Ruling planet: nine planets rule three mansions each, in a fixed order, and the ruler of your birth mansion opens your dasha sequence. That part is a calculation you can check.
  • Gana, the temperament: Deva (divine), Manushya (human) or Rakshasa (fierce). The 27 split evenly, nine of each.
  • Yoni, an animal: two mansions with the same animal get the top score for this factor in kundli matching.
  • Caste, the social role of the classical scheme: Laborer 7, Warrior 6, Outcaste 4, Butcher 4, Merchant 3, Priest 3.
  • Deity and symbol, which carry the imagery each mansion page reads from.
