Your own animal's year is not lucky
Western sites almost universally present the year of your own animal as fortunate. The tradition says the opposite. In Chinese custom it is ben ming nian — you are said to offend Tai Sui, the god of the year, and the twelve months pass harder than usual.
The customary protection is to wear red, and specifically red given to you by someone else rather than bought for yourself. Red underwear, belts and socks are all standard, and sales of them genuinely spike in the run-up to each new year.
So a Dragon turning 24, 36, 48 or 60 in a Dragon year is, by the tradition, entering the year to be careful in — not the year to celebrate.
Why the year does not start in January
The Chinese calendar is lunisolar: months follow the Moon, and the year is kept in step with the seasons by inserting an extra month when needed. The new year falls on the second new moon after the winter solstice, which lands somewhere between 21 January and 20 February.
The practical consequence is that roughly one person in eight is assigned the wrong animal by calculators that just divide the year by twelve. If you were born in January or early February, check the table.

Sixty years, not twelve
Each animal pairs with an element, and elements run in a five-part cycle holding two years each. Twelve animals against five elements gives sixty combinations — so a Wood Dragon recurs only once every sixty years. That sixty-year cycle, the sexagenary cycle, is the real unit of the Chinese calendar.
