Elements and modalities

The two axes that organise the zodiac — and the reason no two signs are alike.

The four elements

Enthusiasm, initiative and self-expression. Fire signs act first and consider afterwards; they generate momentum and burn through it.

Practicality, patience and results you can touch. Earth signs build slowly and distrust anything that cannot be tested.

Ideas, language and connection. Air signs process by talking and think in systems; they can hold a concept at arm's length indefinitely.

Feeling, memory and undercurrent. Water signs read the room before anyone speaks and struggle to unfeel what they have felt.

Starts things. Each cardinal sign opens a season — Aries the spring, Cancer the summer, Libra the autumn, Capricorn the winter.

Holds things. The fixed signs sit at the middle of each season, when the weather has settled. They consolidate and resist change.

Adapts. The mutable signs close each season, when it is already turning into the next. They are built for transition.

Four elements times three modalities gives twelve combinations — and each is occupied by exactly one sign. That is the whole structure of the zodiac.
