The three modalities
Cardinal
Starts things. Each cardinal sign opens a season — Aries the spring, Cancer the summer, Libra the autumn, Capricorn the winter.
Fixed
Holds things. The fixed signs sit at the middle of each season, when the weather has settled. They consolidate and resist change.
Mutable
Adapts. The mutable signs close each season, when it is already turning into the next. They are built for transition.

Even in time, uneven on the horizon
By time the four elements are almost exactly equal: the Sun spends about 91 days a year in each, because the three signs of an element are spread evenly around the wheel and their differing lengths cancel out. The ascendant is a different matter. Signs rise at speeds that depend on latitude, and the elements do not share the horizon equally anywhere except at the equator.
Fire and water gain as you go north, earth and air lose, and the gap widens with latitude — at 60°N the split is closer to 27 / 23 than to 25 / 25. Nothing interpretive is involved: it is the angle between the ecliptic and the horizon. The rising sign calculator shows the same effect sign by sign.
Triplicity rulers: the older scheme
Before each sign had a single ruler, each element had three: one planet for charts of the day, one for charts of the night, and a third called the participating ruler that was read alongside both. The grouping below is the Dorothean scheme, the one most often quoted; Ptolemy’s version differs in places. It is the reason older texts talk about the strength of a planet by triplicity rather than by sign alone.
Which elements get along
Signs of the same element sit 120° apart — a trine — and understand each other with little translation. Fire and air are traditionally compatible: air feeds fire, and both are outward, active and quick. Earth and water pair the same way: water nourishes earth, and both are receptive, private and slow to change. Fire with water and earth with air are the classic mismatches — steam and dust — though in real charts those pairings often supply exactly what the other lacks.
Polarity: the third grouping
The signs also alternate between two polarities. Fire and air signs are positive (traditionally called masculine or yang): extroverted and outward-directed. Earth and water signs are negative (feminine or yin): introverted and inward-directed. The words describe direction of energy, not gender, and modern astrologers often prefer "active" and "receptive".
Elements and the four temperaments
The four elements came into astrology from ancient Greek philosophy, where Empedocles named fire, earth, air and water as the roots of everything, and physicians later linked them to the four temperaments. Fire corresponds to the choleric temperament, air to the sanguine, earth to the melancholic and water to the phlegmatic — a scheme that survives in astrology long after medicine abandoned it.
Reading the elements in a whole chart
Your Sun sign is only one placement. Counting the element of the Sun, Moon, ascendant and personal planets gives an element balance: several placements in one element strengthen its qualities, and an element with no placements at all is read as a quality that has to be learned rather than one that comes naturally. One caution before reading anything into a missing element: the count depends on the birth time. Without it there is no ascendant and the Moon may be in either of two signs, so two of the fastest-moving placements are absent — and that is precisely where a fourth element tends to turn up. A chart drawn without a time regularly shows a gap that a timed chart does not.
