Why Mercury rules Gemini, in Ptolemy’s words
“Mercury never has greater distance from the Sun than the space of one sign, and is beneath all the other planets: hence he is nearest to both luminaries, and the remaining two signs, Gemini and Virgo, are allotted to him.”

Ptolemy wrote in Alexandria, and his reasoning is from the northern hemisphere, where Cancer and Leo are the summer signs. He knew seven planets, and this scheme of rulers is still the one astrologers use.

“It’s an aerial, hot, moyst, sanguine, Diurnal, common or double-bodied humain Signe; the diurnall house of [Mercury]: of the aery triplicity, Westerne, Masculine.”
“An upright, tall, straight Body either in Man or Woman, the Complexion sanguine, not cleer, but obscure and dark, long Arms, but many times the Hands and Feet short and very fleshy; a dark Haire, almost black; a strong, active Body, a good piercing hazle Eye, and wanton, and of perfect sight, of excellent understanding, and judicious in worldly affaires.”

Christian Astrology was the first astrology textbook of its kind printed in English rather than Latin. Lilly used these descriptions mainly for the sign rising at a birth or at the moment a question was asked; reading character from the Sun’s sign alone was popularized by newspaper horoscopes in the 1930s. Spelling and punctuation are as printed, with the long s and u/v modernized; signs and planets printed as symbols are given in square brackets.
