The signs are equal in degrees, not in days. In 2026 the Sun stays longest in Cancer and passes through Capricorn fastest. US birth records split unevenly as well: Leo, Virgo and Cancer account for the most births.
Cancer lasts 31.45 days and Capricorn 29.44; by births, Leo leads with 8.96% and Capricorn trails with 7.63%. An even split would be 30.44 days and 8.33%.

The zodiac is not a list of twelve unrelated personalities. It is a wheel divided two ways at once: four elements of three signs each, and three modalities of four signs each. Every sign is a unique pairing of the two — there is exactly one cardinal fire sign, and it is Aries.
That structure is why compatibility can be calculated rather than asserted. Signs of the same element sit 120 degrees apart; signs of the same modality sit 90 or 180 apart. The angle does the work.

The table above gives the usual ranges, but every boundary shifts by up to a day from year to year, because the Sun does not reach each sign at the same moment annually. If you were born within a day of a boundary, your birth year — and sometimes the hour — settles it.
Element (fire, earth, air, water) describes temperament. Modality (cardinal, fixed, mutable) describes how a sign handles change — starting it, resisting it or adapting to it.
