♈ Aries · March 21 – April 19

Initiative, appetite and the willingness to go first.

Strength. Starts things other people are still discussing. Recovers from setbacks faster than almost any other sign.

Friction. Bores quickly, interrupts constantly, and treats patience as a personal insult.

♉ Taurus · April 20 – May 20

Steadiness, comfort and a long attention span.

Strength. Outlasts everyone. Builds slowly and does not abandon what is half-finished.

Friction. Confuses immovability with principle, and resists change long after it has stopped being optional.

♊ Gemini · May 21 – June 20

Curiosity, quickness and a need for variety.

Strength. Learns fast, connects unrelated ideas, and can talk to anyone about anything.

Friction. Starts more than it finishes, and uses cleverness to avoid depth.

♋ Cancer · June 21 – July 22

Protection, memory and deep attachment.

Strength. Reads emotional undercurrents accurately and looks after people without being asked.

Friction. Withdraws instead of stating the problem, and keeps score in silence.

♌ Leo · July 23 – August 22

Warmth, presence and the need to be seen doing it.

Strength. Genuinely generous, and lifts the mood of a room by walking into it.

Friction. Needs recognition badly enough that its absence reads as rejection.

♍ Virgo · August 23 – September 22

Precision, usefulness and noticing what is off.

Strength. Spots the flaw everyone else missed, and fixes it rather than pointing at it.

Friction. Applies the same scrutiny to itself until nothing is ever finished well enough.

♎ Libra · September 23 – October 22

Balance, fairness and acute awareness of other people.

Strength. Sees every side of a dispute and can make opposing parties feel heard.

Friction. Avoids decisions to avoid disappointing anyone, which disappoints everyone eventually.

♏ Scorpio · October 23 – November 21

Intensity, privacy and refusal to accept surfaces.

Strength. Sees through pretence instantly and commits completely once convinced.

Friction. Tests people rather than asking, and remembers slights for a very long time.

♐ Sagittarius · November 22 – December 21

Expansion, honesty and appetite for the unfamiliar.

Strength. Genuinely open-minded and hard to discourage. Says the thing nobody else will.

Friction. Says it without checking whether it needed saying, and leaves before the consequences land.

♑ Capricorn · December 22 – January 19

Ambition, structure and playing the long game.

Strength. Plans in decades and executes without needing encouragement along the way.

Friction. Measures worth by achievement, and struggles to rest without guilt.

♒ Aquarius · January 20 – February 18

Independence, principle and distance from the herd.

Strength. Thinks for itself and cares about fairness at a scale beyond its own circle.

Friction. Intellectualises feeling, and mistakes emotional distance for objectivity.

♓ Pisces · February 19 – March 20

Empathy, imagination and porous boundaries.

Strength. Feels what other people feel, often before they do. Creative without forcing it.

Friction. Absorbs moods indiscriminately and retreats into fantasy when reality gets loud.

How the twelve are organised

The zodiac is not a list of twelve unrelated personalities. It is a wheel divided two ways at once: four elements of three signs each, and three modalities of four signs each. Every sign is a unique pairing of the two — there is exactly one cardinal fire sign, and it is Aries.

That structure is why compatibility can be calculated rather than asserted. Signs of the same element sit 120 degrees apart; signs of the same modality sit 90 or 180 apart. The angle does the work.
