Every site treats the twelve rising signs as one-in-twelve chances. They are not. The ecliptic meets the horizon at an angle that depends on your latitude, so the signs crawl across the ascendant at wildly different speeds. At the latitude of London, Aries takes 170.3 minutes to rise and Virgo only 52.3 — meaning Aries rising is 3.26 times more common than Virgo rising, for reasons that have nothing to do with astrology and everything to do with geometry.

The ascendant is the degree of the ecliptic sitting on the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. It is not a planet and it is not a position in space — it is a statement about where you were standing and what time it was. That is precisely why it needs an exact birth time and a place, and why the Sun sign does not.
It advances through the entire zodiac once per sidereal day, so it moves about 360° in 23 hours 56 minutes — roughly a degree every four minutes. Traditionally it is read as the mask: how you come across before anyone knows you, and the body you arrive in.
Compare the three fast placements. The Sun moves 1° per day, so being an hour out changes it by 2.5 arcminutes — nothing. The Moon moves 13° per day, so an hour costs half a degree, which matters only at a boundary. The ascendant moves 15° per hour. An hour of error is half a sign, and two hours is a different sign entirely with a different ruling planet.
This is the single most common reason people get contradictory readings from different sites, and it is not a disagreement between astrologers — it is arithmetic acting on a number nobody wrote down carefully in 1994.
