Patterns worth noticing

• Sun and Moon in the same sign means you were born within about two days of a new moon — about one person in twelve. The chart doubles down on one sign’s way of being, which gives focus and removes the counterweight.
• Sun and Moon in opposite signs means a birth near a full moon: what you want and what you need pull in opposite directions, and much of life is spent reconciling them.
• Rising sign and Sun sign the same means you were born around sunrise, when the Sun itself sits on the ascendant.

Count the elements. Three signs of one element — all fire, say — read as a strong, single-minded temperament; two in one element and one in another point to where the odd one out adds what the others lack. If the three placements were independent one-in-twelve draws, the split would be:

• two in one element and one in another — 56% of people;
• three different elements — 37.5%;
• all three in one element — 6%.

With twelve signs in each position there are 1,728 possible big threes — but they are not equally common. The Sun and Moon combinations are close to even, while rising signs vary with latitude: in London Libra holds the ascendant 3.3 times as long as Pisces.

Each ascendant is read on its own page, with the angles it produces and the birth hour it implies: Aries rising, Taurus rising, Gemini rising, Cancer rising, Leo rising, Virgo rising, Libra rising, Scorpio rising, Sagittarius rising, Capricorn rising, Aquarius rising and Pisces rising.

A worked example

Take a Capricorn Sun, a Cancer Moon and a Libra ascendant. The Sun wants achievement and structure; the Moon, in the opposite sign, needs closeness and a safe home, so this person was born near a full moon and often feels torn between work and family. The Libra ascendant smooths it over — people meet someone pleasant and diplomatic, and rarely see the tug-of-war underneath. Read together, the three describe a person who seems easy-going, works very hard, and needs more reassurance at home than they ask for.

Reading them against each other

The productive way to use a big three is to look for the contradiction, not the theme. A chart where all three agree is telling you very little — it is one message repeated three times. A chart where the Sun wants recognition, the Moon wants to be left alone and the ascendant reads as easy-going is describing a specific, recognisable friction, and that friction is the only part of the exercise with any use in it.

Which is also why the confidence labels matter. If your ascendant is a coin-flip between two signs:

• do not build a reading on the tension between it and your Moon;
• fix the birth time first, or work with the two placements you can actually rely on.
