How to read a birth chart

How to read a birth chart comes down to a small vocabulary — 12 signs, 12 houses, 10 planets and 5 major aspects, 39 items in total. Learn them in the order a chart is built and it becomes readable; start with interpretations and it stays a list. Two things beginners are rarely told: half the planets describe a generation rather than a person, and without an accurate birth time the ascendant is only a guess.

1 The big three Sun, Moon and rising. Identity, emotional reflex and the way you meet a room. Everything else is detail on top of these.
2 The houses Twelve areas of life. A planet says what, a house says where — the same Mars is a different story in the seventh house than in the tenth.
3 The planets Ten functions. Learn which are personal and which are generational before you read a word of interpretation.
4 The aspects The angles between them. This is where a chart stops being a list and starts being a system.

The five major aspects are the conjunction (0°), sextile (60°), square (90°), trine (120°) and opposition (180°). Planet colors follow how long each one typically stays in a sign.

The two things nobody tells beginners

Half the planets are not about you. Pluto spends 12 to 27 years in a sign, Neptune 14 to 15, Uranus 7 to 9. Everyone born in that window shares the placement, so a reading treating it as a personal trait is describing a generation and calling it you. The Moon changes sign about every 2.3 days — that one distinguishes siblings.

The ascendant is unforgiving about time. It moves about 15 degrees an hour on average, so half an hour of error shifts it noticeably and two hours move it a whole house. If the birth time is a guess, the ascendant and the houses are guesses too, and any honest chart says so instead of printing a number.

There is a third, less comfortable one: the signs are not equal in length. The Sun spends about 31 days in some and under 30 in others, because the Earth moves faster near perihelion. Fixed date tables are approximations, and near a boundary they are simply wrong.

Practice beats reading about it

Take three charts you know well — your own and two people you can check against reality. Say out loud what each placement suggests before looking anything up, then look it up and notice where you were close and where you invented.

That last part matters more than the hit rate. A chart offers enough material that something always fits, and the skill worth building is noticing when you are pattern-matching rather than reading.
