Affirmations

58.3% of the popular ones are written in the one form a 2009 study linked to feeling worse. Here they are anyway — marked, and rewritten.

Two different practices, one word

The studies people cite are not about the lists they sell

Positive self-statements are what you get when you search for affirmations: "I am wealthy", "I am beautiful". Self-affirmation theory is the research programme — and it is about affirming a personal value, not a personal quality. Those are different things, and only the second has the evidence base.

The distinction is not academic hair-splitting. When the first form was tested directly, it went the wrong way for the people most likely to use it.

1988 · Claude Steele

Introduced self-affirmation theory: affirming a personal value reduces defensiveness when self-image is threatened. This is the body of work the phrase "affirmations are proven" refers to — and it is about values, not self-praise.

2009 · Wood, Perunovic & Lee

Participants with low self-esteem who repeated "I am a lovable person" reported worse mood than those who did not. Those with high self-esteem improved slightly. The paper is titled "Positive self-statements: power for some, peril for others".

2013 · Cohen & Sherman

Review of two decades of values-affirmation trials in education and health, with effects lasting years in some school studies. Again values, again not self-description.

None of this means affirmations are useless. It means the form decides the outcome, and the form is the thing nobody labels.

Four forms, two of them safe

Forms of affirmation and their risk
FormShapeRiskWhy
Statement of fact I am / I have — asserts a present state high The form used in almost every published list, and the one tested in the 2009 study where it lowered mood in people with low self-esteem. If the claim is far from what you currently believe, the mind supplies counter-evidence.
Statement of process I am learning / I am getting better at — asserts direction low Hard to argue with, because it claims movement rather than arrival. Nothing in your history contradicts "I am learning to handle money".
Statement of choice I choose to / I am willing to — asserts intent low Describes a decision, which is entirely within your control and therefore unfalsifiable by your own memory.
Statement of value What matters to me is — names a value rather than a trait none This is the form used in self-affirmation research — the one with the strong evidence base. Notably, it is almost absent from affirmation lists.
58.3% of the 120 affirmations we classified are statements of fact — 70 lines.
17 are value statements — the form with the actual research behind it. It is the rarest of the four.
17 topics, 408,630 searches a month between them.

The proportion is the finding. The form with evidence is the one almost nobody writes, and the form that tested badly is the one filling every list — including, before we marked it, ours.

By topic, and how risky each set is

The share of fact-form lines differs by subject — highest where the claim is furthest from what a person struggling with that subject can honestly say.

How to pick one

Say it and notice whether you argue back. That is the entire test, and the answer is personal: someone with savings can say "I am wealthy" without friction, and for them the fact form is harmless. Someone in debt cannot, and for them the same line produces the overdraft rather than the wealth.

Where a line does provoke an argument, change the claim rather than the subject — from arrived to moving. "I am wealthy" becomes "I am learning to handle what I earn". Nothing in your history contradicts a direction, so there is nothing for the mind to rebut.

Every topic page marks each line by form and gives that rewrite in the third column.
