How long does each planet stay in one sign?

On average the Moon changes sign every 2.3 days and Pluto about every 21 years, a ratio of more than three thousand to one. The highlighted four — Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto — stay long enough that a sign describes everyone born in the same years.

The scheme of essential dignities goes back to Ptolemy’s Tetrabiblos in the second century. A planet in the sign it rules is at home and acts in its own nature; in the sign of its exaltation it is honored and at its best. Opposite its home it is in detriment, working against the grain, and opposite its exaltation it is in fall, weakened or ill at ease. These are tendencies, not verdicts: a planet in detriment often produces the most effort and skill.

The seven traditional planets also give the week its days — Sunday and Monday for the Sun and Moon, Saturday for Saturn, and in the Romance languages Mars, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus for Tuesday to Friday, as in Spanish martes, miércoles, jueves, viernes. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, discovered in 1781, 1846 and 1930, were given modern rulerships of Aquarius, Pisces and Scorpio; astrologers still disagree about their exaltations.

Personal, social, generational

Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars move quickly and differ between people born days apart — these are the personal planets, and they carry most of what a chart says about an individual.

Jupiter and Saturn sit in the middle, changing sign every one to two and a half years. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto take from about seven to more than thirty years to cross a single sign, so people born years apart still share them. Reading Pluto in Scorpio as a personal trait is reading a whole generation.

That is why the house a slow planet occupies, and the aspects it makes to your Sun, Moon and personal planets, matter more than its sign.
