The earth signs are Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn — the signs that ask what a thing costs, how long it lasts and who will maintain it. The Sun crosses them in 91.3 days a year (25%), and with 24.86% of US births for 2000–2014 they come last of the four elements, if only just.
The three earth signs

What earth actually means
Earth is the element of consequence. It treats an idea as unfinished until something exists that can be weighed, eaten, sold or lived in. This is why earth signs read as slow: they are not slow at thinking, they are unwilling to commit before the material facts are in, which looks identical from outside.

A chart with no earth is the classic reading for someone whose life is full of good ideas and unpaid invoices. The tradition treats it as a practical gap rather than a character flaw — the structures other people build by instinct, this person has to build deliberately, usually after the second time it goes wrong.
Where the idea of earth signs comes from
Earth was the heavy element in Greek physics, the one that falls and stays where it lands. Cold and dry in the old scheme, it is the element the other three are pictured acting upon — fire warms it, water shapes it, air passes over it. Its signs inherited exactly that position.
In the temperaments that came with it, earth is the melancholic element: cold and dry — the temperament classical medicine associated with caution, endurance and a long memory for slights. Its triplicity rulers are Venus by day, the Moon by night and Mars alongside them.
