Strength. Attracts attention and opportunity without effort. Sets a high bar and clears it.

Friction. Impatient with limits and with people who need them explained.

Each animal also governs two hours of the day — the Dragon holds 07:00–09:00. Someone born in those hours is said to carry the Dragon as an inner sign regardless of their year.

The five Dragons

The Dragon's own fixed element is Earth. The element of the year interacts with it differently each time, which is what separates the five versions — and why the cycle runs sixty years.

The five elemental versions of the Dragon
VersionYearsRelation to Earth
Earth Dragon 1928, 1988 Doubled — strongest expression
Metal Dragon 1940, 2000 Drained by it — productive but costly
Water Dragon 1952, 2012 Dominated by it — most forceful
Wood Dragon 1964, 2024 Controls it — most restrained
Fire Dragon 1976, 2036 Feeds it — best supported

Measured in birth records

The Dragon changes how many people are born

The Dragon is the only zodiac sign with a measurable effect on actual birth rates. Across Chinese-heritage populations, births rise noticeably in Dragon years — the pattern shows up in Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia and mainland China, and has been documented since the 1976 Dragon year.

Demographer Daniel Goodkind published the first systematic studies of the effect in the early 1990s, finding birth increases of several per cent in Dragon years among ethnic Chinese populations — including those living in countries where the surrounding population showed no such pattern.

It has downstream effects nobody planned: Dragon cohorts hit oversubscribed school years and more competitive job markets, and some research finds they end up better educated on average — parents who chose the year also invested more in it.

This is the only part of the Chinese zodiac with an evidence base. It is not evidence that the sign shapes character — it is evidence that the belief shapes behaviour, which is a different and much better documented thing.

Calculated from the lunar calendar

Not every Dragon year is the same length

A lunisolar year runs 12 or 13 lunar months, so it lasts between 353 and 385 days rather than a fixed 365. That means the window for being born under a sign is genuinely wider in some years than others.

1928 23 Jan 1928 9 Feb 1929 384 13 — leap year

A leap month is inserted seven times every nineteen years to keep the lunar calendar aligned with the seasons. Those are the 13-month years, and they run a full month longer than the others — a difference of about a month in how long a sign lasts.

The next Dragon year is 2036

By tradition that is the year for a Dragon to be careful in, not to celebrate. Why your own animal's year is considered unlucky.
