Dragon personality
The Dragon is the only mythical animal of the twelve, and tradition treats it as the most powerful: confident, ambitious, energetic and lucky. Dragons think big, inspire others and expect to lead. They are intelligent, enthusiastic and generous when things are going their way, and they rarely doubt that they will.
Their faults come from the same size. Dragons can be arrogant, impatient, demanding and blind to details others have to clean up. They dislike being told no and can take criticism as an insult. When their energy has a worthy goal they achieve a great deal; without one, it turns into restlessness.

In this chapter Wang Chong names eleven of the twelve animals; the dragon appears only as the Blue Dragon, the constellation of the east. Wang Chong already pairs the earthly branches with the animals still used today — and lists them to argue against the idea that animals fight because of their elements. The sheep of his text is the goat of the modern zodiac, the boar its pig.

The Dragon's own fixed element is Earth. The element of the year interacts with it differently each time, which is what separates the five versions — and why the cycle runs sixty years.

Measured in birth records
The Dragon changes how many people are born
The Dragon is the only zodiac sign with a measurable effect on actual birth rates. Across Chinese-heritage populations, births rise noticeably in Dragon years — the pattern has been documented since the 1976 Dragon year in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia.
Demographer Daniel Goodkind published the first systematic studies of the effect in the early 1990s, finding birth increases of several percent in Dragon years among ethnic Chinese populations — including those living in countries where the surrounding population showed no such pattern.
What followed
It has downstream effects nobody planned: Dragon cohorts hit oversubscribed school years and more competitive job markets, and some research finds they end up better educated on average — parents who chose the year also invested more in it.
This is the only part of the Chinese zodiac with an evidence base. It is not evidence that the sign shapes character — it is evidence that the belief shapes behavior, which is a different and much better documented thing.

The 9 Dragon years from 1928 to 2024 last anywhere from 354 to 384 days, so the window for being born under the sign is wider in some years than in others. Four of them have a thirteenth, leap month.
