Chinese horoscope and zodiac
This Chinese horoscope calculator finds your animal sign from your full birth date, not just the year. The Chinese year starts between January 21 and February 20, so if you were born in that window, any site that asks only for the year has been giving you the wrong animal.
The full date matters. Enter only a year anywhere else and you get a coin flip if you were born in January or early February.

Computed from 110 years of real new year dates
Roughly one person in ten is told the wrong animal
The Chinese year is lunisolar, so its start date moves. Across our table it lands as early as January 21 (1966) and as late as February 20 (1985) — a window of 31 days. On average it falls on day 35.8 of the calendar year, which means 9.5% of the average year sits before it.
Everyone born in that stretch belongs to the previous animal. Ask for a year alone and you hand those people the wrong sign, the wrong element, and a reading built on both.
Born on February 1? In 61.8% of the years that date still belonged to the previous animal. The odds fall below even on February 5 and reach 30% by February 10; from February 20 on, your calendar year and your animal year always agree.
Lunar new year, year by year
The actual dates, not an approximation. If your birthday falls before the date for your year, you are the previous animal.
Horoscope, zodiac, or animal sign?
The words get used interchangeably and they are not the same thing. The twelve animals are a zodiac — a cycle of signs. A horoscope in the strict sense is a chart cast for a moment. In English-language usage “Chinese horoscope” has come to mean both the animal sign and the yearly forecast attached to it, which is why this page answers the first and the year pages answer the second.
Why the date moves so much
A lunar month is about 29.53 days, so twelve of them fall roughly eleven days short of a solar year. The Chinese calendar corrects this by inserting a thirteenth month every two or three years — which means a lunar year runs either about 354 or about 384 days. The new year date therefore drifts back by around eleven days, then jumps forward by about nineteen when the leap month lands.
- After a 12-month year the date slipped back 10–12 days, 10.9 on average — 69 times in the table.
- After a 13-month year it jumped forward 18–20 days, 18.7 on average — 40 times.
- That sawtooth makes the 31-day window, and it is why a rule like “Chinese new year is in February” fails in years like 1966.
