Personality
The Wood Horse personality
Anyone born from February 3, 1954 through January 23, 1955 is a Wood Horse: the yang wood stem 甲 over the 午 branch.
Wood feeds the Horse's own Fire in the five-element cycle, so this Horse is the best supported of the five. Wood brings growth, patience and cooperation — traditionally the most flexible version, one that expands rather than forces.
Stem and branch
1954 is 甲午 (Jiǎwǔ)
Na yin — the sounding element
Gold in the Sand 沙中金
Grains of gold mixed into sand, found only by washing. Readings describe worth that has to be separated from the ordinary — value revealed through effort and sorting.
1954 therefore carries wood from its stem and metal from its na yin. What na yin is →
Li Chun inside the year
An ordinary single-spring year
The two Li Chun dates around it are February 4, 1954 and February 4, 1955, Beijing time. The Horse year spans February 3, 1954 to January 23, 1955, so exactly one of them sits inside it. What double spring and blind years mean →
Who clashes with a 1954 Horse
The 午 branch puts a 1954 Horse opposite the Rat on the wheel, the traditional clash; the nearest Rat year after it was 1960. Its harmony partner is the Goat, whose year followed straight after, in 1955. How the Horse and Rat get on →
Horses born in 1954 turn 72 in 2026 — 73 by the traditional count, which starts at one.
If you were born in 1954
- Born January 1 – February 2, 1954: a Water Snake, the animal of 1953.
- Born February 3, 1954 or later in the year: a Wood Horse.
A year-only calculator mislabels 33 days of 1954, everything from January 1 to February 2. Roughly one US birth in 11 falls on those dates — 8.7% in SSA records for 2000–2014. Check your exact date →
The Horse across the cycle
The animal returns every 12 years but the element every 60, so each of these years is a different Horse.
The lunar calendar of 1954
Why 355 days, and not 365
No month was doubled in 1954, so the year ended on January 23, 1955 after twelve months — seven long ones of 30 days and five short ones of 29, 355 days in all.
The 30-day months were the 1st, 3rd, 6th, 8th, 9th, 11th and 12th.

The year's first full moon arrived at 3:17 AM on February 18, the day after the Lantern Festival. The true full moon came two days after the Mid-Autumn Festival, at 4:19 AM Beijing time on September 13 — lunar day 17.
Dates follow Beijing time (UTC+8), the reference clock of the Chinese calendar. Why lunar years differ in length →
Lunar years around 1954
Lengths differ because a leap month is inserted every two or three years. This is what makes the new year date jump rather than drift.
By date, 1954 sits mid-table: of the 110 new years, 46 fall earlier in the calendar and 60 later. Three other years share the date. Twelve years earlier, 1942 began on February 15; twelve years later, 1966 began on January 21 — both marked in lavender with the other Horse years.
