Character
The Rat is the first animal of the cycle, and tradition gives it the qualities of a first mover: quick wit, charm and an instinct for opportunity. Rats read a room fast, remember who knows whom and are rarely caught without a plan B. They are sociable, good company and often funny, but behind the charm there is calculation — a Rat is usually a step ahead and prefers it that way.
The same instincts have a shadow. Rats can hoard money, information and favors, worry about scarcity even when things are fine, and be quietly opportunistic about people. They are adaptable rather than stubborn, which serves them well in a crisis and less well when a situation needs patience instead of a clever exit.

In love the Rat is attentive, romantic and generous with the people it trusts, and it notices small things a partner needs. It can also be possessive and slow to show vulnerability. It does best with someone steady enough to calm its restlessness and sharp enough to keep up.
Rats are natural traders, analysts and fixers: business, finance, research, writing, negotiation and anything where reading people quickly pays. With money they are savers and opportunists at once — good at spotting a deal, nervous about spending on themselves.
The traditional weak point is nervous energy: overwork, poor sleep and stress that builds up quietly. Rats are advised to rest before they need to rather than after.
