Personality
The Wood Dragon personality
Anyone born from February 13, 1964 through February 1, 1965 is a Wood Dragon: the yang wood stem 甲 over the 辰 branch.
Wood controls the Dragon's own Earth in the five-element cycle, so the year's element pushes against the sign rather than with it. Wood brings growth, patience and cooperation — traditionally the most flexible version, one that expands rather than forces.
Stem and branch
1964 is 甲辰 (Jiǎchén)
Na yin — the sounding element
Lamp Fire 覆燈火
The flame of a covered lamp. The image is light for a small space: steady illumination that guides others at close range and needs protection from wind.
1964 therefore carries wood from its stem and fire from its na yin. What na yin is →
Li Chun inside the year
A "blind" year with no spring
The two Li Chun dates around it are February 5, 1964 and February 4, 1965, Beijing time. The Dragon year spans February 13, 1964 to February 1, 1965, so neither date sits inside it: a blind year (无春年). What double spring and blind years mean →
Who clashes with a 1964 Dragon
The 辰 branch puts a 1964 Dragon opposite the Dog on the wheel, the traditional clash; the nearest Dog year after it was 1970. Its harmony partner is the Rooster, whose year came round 5 years later, in 1969. How the Dragon and Dog get on →
Dragons born in 1964 turn 62 in 2026 — 63 by the traditional count, which starts at one.
If you were born in 1964
- Born January 1 – February 12, 1964: a Water Rabbit, the animal of 1963.
- Born February 13, 1964 or later in the year: a Wood Dragon.
This is one of the late new years: 43 days, from New Year's Day to February 12, still belong to the Rabbit. That is about one US birth in 9 (11.4%, SSA records 2000–2014). Check your exact date →
The Dragon across the cycle
The animal returns every 12 years but the element every 60, so each of these years is a different Dragon.
The lunar calendar of 1964
Why 355 days, and not 365
No month was doubled in 1964, so the year ended on February 1, 1965 after twelve months — seven long ones of 30 days and five short ones of 29, 355 days in all.
The 30-day months were the 1st, 3rd, 6th, 8th, 10th, 11th and 12th. Three 30-day months ran back to back, from month 10 to month 12.

| Festival | Lunar date | Date |
|---|---|---|
| Lantern Festival 元宵节 | first month, day 15 | Thu, Feb 27, 1964 |
| Dragon Boat Festival 端午节 | fifth month, day 5 | Sun, Jun 14, 1964 |
| Qixi, the Double Seventh 七夕 | seventh month, day 7 | Fri, Aug 14, 1964 |
| Ghost Festival 中元节 | seventh month, day 15 | Sat, Aug 22, 1964 |
| Mid-Autumn Festival 中秋节 | eighth month, day 15 | Sun, Sep 20, 1964 |
| Double Ninth Festival 重阳节 | ninth month, day 9 | Wed, Oct 14, 1964 |
| Winter solstice 冬至 | solar term, Sun at 270° | Tue, Dec 22, 1964 |
| Laba Festival 腊八节 | twelfth month, day 8 | Sun, Jan 10, 1965 |
At the Lantern Festival on February 27 the year's first full moon came that same day, at 8:39 PM Beijing time. The true full moon came two days after the Mid-Autumn Festival, at 1:30 AM Beijing time on September 22 — lunar day 17.
Dates follow Beijing time (UTC+8), the reference clock of the Chinese calendar. Why lunar years differ in length →
Lunar years around 1964
Lengths differ because a leap month is inserted every two or three years. This is what makes the new year date jump rather than drift.
Only 22 of the 110 new years in the table fall later in the calendar than February 13. Four other years share the date. Twelve years earlier, 1952 began on January 27; twelve years later, 1976 began on January 31 — both marked in lavender with the other Dragon years.
