1947: year of the Fire Pig
The Pig year started on January 22, not on January 1 — so anyone born in 1947 before that date is a Dog.

Personality
The Fire Pig personality
Anyone born from January 22, 1947 through February 9, 1948 is a Fire Pig: the yin fire stem 丁 over the 亥 branch.
The Pig's own Water controls Fire here, so the sign keeps the upper hand over the year's element. Fire brings intensity, visibility and speed — traditionally the most driven version, and the quickest to burn through its own energy.
Stem and branch
1947 is 丁亥 (Dīnghài)
Na yin — the sounding element
Earth on the Roof 屋上土
Earth or tiles forming a roof. The image is shelter and the home: stability that serves a household, and usefulness that depends on being placed where it is needed.
1947 therefore carries fire from its stem and earth from its na yin. What na yin is →
Li Chun inside the year
A double spring year
The two Li Chun dates around it are February 4, 1947 and February 5, 1948, Beijing time. The Pig year spans January 22, 1947 to February 9, 1948, so both dates sit inside it: a double spring year (双春). What double spring and blind years mean →
Who clashes with a 1947 Pig
The 亥 branch puts a 1947 Pig opposite the Snake on the wheel, the traditional clash; the nearest Snake year after it was 1953. Its harmony partner is the Tiger, whose year came round 3 years later, in 1950. How the Pig and Snake get on →
Pigs born in 1947 turn 79 in 2026 — 80 by the traditional count, which starts at one.
If you were born in 1947
- Born January 1 – January 21, 1947: a Fire Dog, the animal of 1946.
- Born January 22, 1947 or later in the year: a Fire Pig.
Only the first 21 days of 1947 belong to the Dog, yet a year-only calculator still calls them Pigs. Those dates hold 5.5% of US births (SSA, 2000–2014). Check your exact date →
The Pig across the cycle
The animal returns every 12 years but the element every 60, so each of these years is a different Pig.
The lunar calendar of 1947
Why 384 days, and not 365
1947 repeated its second month: the leap month 闰二月 ran from March 23 to April 20 and stretched the year to 384 days. Seven of the 13 months had 30 days.
The 30-day months were the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 9th, 11th and 12th.
Festival dates in the 1947 lunar year
| Festival | Lunar date | Date |
|---|---|---|
| Lantern Festival 元宵节 | first month, day 15 | Wed, Feb 5, 1947 |
| Dragon Boat Festival 端午节 | fifth month, day 5 | Mon, Jun 23, 1947 |
| Qixi, the Double Seventh 七夕 | seventh month, day 7 | Fri, Aug 22, 1947 |
| Ghost Festival 中元节 | seventh month, day 15 | Sat, Aug 30, 1947 |
| Mid-Autumn Festival 中秋节 | eighth month, day 15 | Mon, Sep 29, 1947 |
| Double Ninth Festival 重阳节 | ninth month, day 9 | Wed, Oct 22, 1947 |
| Winter solstice 冬至 | solar term, Sun at 270° | Tue, Dec 23, 1947 |
| Laba Festival 腊八节 | twelfth month, day 8 | Sun, Jan 18, 1948 |
At the Lantern Festival on February 5 the year's first full moon came that same day, at 11:50 PM Beijing time. The festival night of September 29 fell a day before the true full moon, which came at 3:40 PM Beijing time on September 30 — lunar day 16.
Dates follow Beijing time (UTC+8), the reference clock of the Chinese calendar. Why lunar years differ in length →
Lunar years around 1947
Lengths differ because a leap month is inserted every two or three years. This is what makes the new year date jump rather than drift.
Only one of the 110 new years in the table fall earlier in the calendar than January 22. Two other years share the date. Twelve years earlier, 1935 began on February 4; twelve years later, 1959 began on February 8 — both marked in lavender with the other Pig years.
