Personality
The Metal Goat personality
Anyone born from February 17, 1931 through February 5, 1932 is a Metal Goat: the yin metal stem 辛 over the 未 branch.
The Goat's own Earth feeds Metal here, which drains as much as it gives: productive, but inclined to spend itself. Metal brings discipline, resolve and sharp edges — traditionally the most determined version, and the least willing to bend.
Stem and branch
1931 is 辛未 (Xīnwèi)
Na yin — the sounding element
Earth by the Roadside 路旁土
Soil beside a road, walked past by everyone. The image is usefulness without display — steady, available and easy to overlook, but the ground that everything else travels on.
1931 therefore carries metal from its stem and earth from its na yin. What na yin is →
Li Chun inside the year
An ordinary single-spring year
The two Li Chun dates around it are February 5, 1931 and February 5, 1932, Beijing time. The Goat year spans February 17, 1931 to February 5, 1932, so exactly one of them sits inside it. What double spring and blind years mean →
Who clashes with a 1931 Goat
The 未 branch puts a 1931 Goat opposite the Ox on the wheel, the traditional clash; the nearest Ox year after it was 1937. Its harmony partner is the Horse, whose year came round 11 years later, in 1942. How the Goat and Ox get on →
Goats born in 1931 turn 95 in 2026 — 96 by the traditional count, which starts at one.
If you were born in 1931
- Born January 1 – February 16, 1931: a Metal Horse, the animal of 1930.
- Born February 17, 1931 or later in the year: a Metal Goat.
This is one of the late new years: 47 days, from New Year's Day to February 16, still belong to the Horse. That is about one US birth in 8 (12.5%, SSA records 2000–2014). Check your exact date →
The Goat across the cycle
The animal returns every 12 years but the element every 60, so each of these years is a different Goat.
The lunar calendar of 1931
Why 354 days, and not 365
No leap month this time: from February 17, 1931 to February 5, 1932, 1931 ran twelve months, six of 30 days and six of 29 — 354 days.
The 30-day months were the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 6th, 9th and 11th.
Festival dates in the 1931 lunar year
| Festival | Lunar date | Date |
|---|---|---|
| Lantern Festival 元宵节 | first month, day 15 | Tue, Mar 3, 1931 |
| Dragon Boat Festival 端午节 | fifth month, day 5 | Sat, Jun 20, 1931 |
| Qixi, the Double Seventh 七夕 | seventh month, day 7 | Thu, Aug 20, 1931 |
| Ghost Festival 中元节 | seventh month, day 15 | Fri, Aug 28, 1931 |
| Mid-Autumn Festival 中秋节 | eighth month, day 15 | Sat, Sep 26, 1931 |
| Double Ninth Festival 重阳节 | ninth month, day 9 | Mon, Oct 19, 1931 |
| Winter solstice 冬至 | solar term, Sun at 270° | Wed, Dec 23, 1931 |
| Laba Festival 腊八节 | twelfth month, day 8 | Fri, Jan 15, 1932 |
The year's first full moon arrived at 6:35 PM on March 4, the day after the Lantern Festival. The festival night of September 26 fell a day before the true full moon, which came at 3:44 AM Beijing time on September 27 — lunar day 16.
Dates follow Beijing time (UTC+8), the reference clock of the Chinese calendar. Why lunar years differ in length →
Lunar years around 1931
Lengths differ because a leap month is inserted every two or three years. This is what makes the new year date jump rather than drift.
Only seven of the 110 new years in the table fall later in the calendar than February 17. Four other years share the date. Twelve years later, 1943 began on February 5 — marked in lavender with the other Goat years.
