Three Card tarot spread
The Three Card tarot spread uses 3 cards in fixed positions — past, present, future. The workhorse spread. Fast, readable, and hard to over-interpret. Use it for almost anything. Also works as Situation / Action / Outcome.
How many ways it can fall
3,651,648 possible three card spreads
3 positions drawn without replacement from 78 cards, each landing upright or reversed: 78 × 77 × 76 × 23. Drawn once a day, it would take about 10,000 years to get through them all — so any particular spread is unlikely ever to come up for you twice.
Reversals double the count at every position. Readers who ignore them are working with 456,456 instead — still plenty, but a different deck of possibilities.

Future
Where things are heading if nothing changes. The useful question is what would have to change for this card to be different.
A worked example
Asked "Should I move to a new city?", a reader draws the Five of Cups (past), the Two of Pentacles (present) and the Six of Swords (future). The past card shows grief over what did not work out; the present shows juggling two lives at once; the future card, a boat crossing to calmer water, reads as a move that is a relief rather than a triumph. The story is in the gap: from mourning, through balancing, to leaving.
Where it comes from
The three-card spread has no single inventor: it is the simplest layout that still lets cards be read against each other, and it appears in almost every modern tarot guide. The past–present–future version is the best known, but readers routinely swap in other triads to fit the question.
