Relationship tarot spread
The Relationship tarot spread uses 5 cards in fixed positions — you, them, the connection, what helps, what hinders. Five cards separating your side, their side and the thing between you. Use it when you are tempted to read the whole deck as being about one person.
How many ways it can fall
81,066,585,600 possible relationship spreads
5 positions drawn without replacement from 78 cards, each landing upright or reversed: 78 × 77 × … × 74 × 25. Drawn once a day, it would take about 222 million years to get through them all — so any particular spread is unlikely ever to come up for you twice.
Reversals double the count at every position. Readers who ignore them are working with 2,533,330,800 instead — still plenty, but a different deck of possibilities.

A worked example
For a couple arguing more often, the Queen of Swords as "you" shows sharp honesty; the Page of Cups as "them" shows someone sensitive who wants gentleness; the Two of Cups as "the connection" confirms genuine affection. Temperance as "what helps" asks for moderation in how things are said, and the Five of Wands as "what hinders" names the constant small disputes. The advice is about tone, not about the relationship ending.
Where it comes from
Relationship spreads are a modern development: nineteenth-century cartomancy asked mostly about marriage and fortune, while twentieth-century tarot writers began designing layouts that separate the two people and the dynamic between them. This five-card form is a common modern version.
Variations
Single readers use a version with "what I am looking for", "what blocks love" and "how to open up"; couples sometimes add a sixth card for "where this is heading".
