The Lovers

VI THE LOVERS

Upright

A choice that reveals what you actually value. Often read as romance, but the deeper reading is alignment — between people, or between you and your own principles.

Reversed

Misalignment. A decision made against your own values, or a connection where the two halves want different things.

Where it sits in the sequence

The major arcana run 0 to 21 as a progression — the Fool's journey from unguarded beginning to completed cycle. Card 6 falls in the first stretch, which deals with the outer world and the tools for meeting it.

The astrological attribution is not a modern invention. The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn fixed it in their Book T in 1888, assigning every major arcana to a planet, element or sign, and every numbered minor to a ten-degree decan of the zodiac. Waite and Colman Smith built their 1909 deck on that framework, which is why the correspondences still hold today.

The card-of-the-day figures are exact, not estimated. Our daily draw is derived from the date rather than randomised per visitor, so the whole year can be computed in advance — something no site with a random draw can tell you.

The image

What is on the card

A naked man and woman stand beneath a winged angel, a flaming tree behind him and a serpent-wrapped tree behind her. The sun blazes above.

Every detail in the Waite-Smith deck was placed deliberately by Pamela Colman Smith in 1909, and reading the picture usually gets you further than reading a keyword list. Notice what the figure is doing, where they are looking, and what is behind them.

The Lovers in love, work and health

In love

A significant choice about a relationship, and the values it reveals. Not simply romance.

In career and money

A decision between two paths where one aligns with who you are and the other pays better.

In health

Choices about the body. Alignment between what you want and what you do.

Reading it in a spread

A card means different things by position. In a past-present-future layout, The Lovers in the past describes something already worked through; in the future it describes a direction rather than a fixed outcome.

Read it against its neighbours rather than alone. Two cards from the same suit intensify each other; a major arcana beside a minor tells you the situation is larger than the everyday.
