Something is finishing, and it is not optional. Rarely literal — the card describes clearing ground rather than loss for its own sake.
Death is an ending that makes room for something new — almost never a literal death. It describes transformation, closing a chapter and letting go of what has run its course. Painful as it can be, the card points to renewal on the other side.
Clinging to what has already ended. The change is happening anyway; the resistance only makes it slower.
Reversed, the ending is resisted: clinging to a situation that is over, fear of change, or a slow, drawn-out transition. It can also mean a narrowly avoided ending.

Death almost never means physical death. It marks endings and transformation: a job, a relationship or an identity finishing so that something else can start. Reversed, it points to resisting a necessary ending.
Upright, the end of a relationship or of an old pattern within one, making room for something healthier. Reversed, holding on to what is finished, or refusing to change.
