Growth that is already underway and needs tending rather than forcing. Fertility in every sense — projects, bodies, relationships.
The Empress is abundance, care and growth — the fertile garden in her card. She describes nurturing people and projects, comfort, beauty and creativity that flourishes when it is looked after. Often a card of home, motherhood or a period when effort finally bears fruit.
Smothering, or creative block. Care given until it becomes control, or a well that has been drawn from without refilling.
Reversed, the care has gone out of balance: smothering others, neglecting yourself, or a creative block. It can also point to dependence, or comfort turning into stagnation.

The Empress sits among ripening wheat beside a stream, wearing a crown of twelve stars. A heart-shaped shield carries the symbol of Venus. Everything around her grows — the card is the image of abundance that comes from care.
The Empress signals nurturing, creativity, comfort and fertility in a broad sense: projects, relationships and, sometimes literally, pregnancy. Reversed, it points to neglecting yourself or smothering others.
Upright, a warm, affectionate and sensual relationship; for some, a pregnancy or starting a family. Reversed, over-giving, possessiveness, or neglecting your own needs to look after someone else.
