8 EIGHT OF SWORDS

Eight of Swords upright

Feeling trapped by circumstances that are partly self-imposed. The restrictions are real, but not as complete as they seem.

The Eight of Swords is restriction: feeling trapped, powerless or stuck — often by your own thinking more than by real barriers. The figure is bound and blindfolded, but the ground is open and the bindings are loose.

Eight of Swords reversed

Releasing limiting beliefs, finding a way out or seeing options again.

Reversed, release: seeing a new perspective, freeing yourself and realizing you can move. Help, information or a change of mind opens the way out.

What Waite wrote in 1911

Upright
“Bad news, violent chagrin, crisis, censure, power in trammels, conflict, calumny; also sickness.”
Reversed
“Disquiet, difficulty, opposition, accident, treachery; what is unforeseen; fatality.”
A. E. Waite, The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (London: William Rider & Son, 1911), Part III, § 2 — read the original text. Waite’s book accompanied the Rider deck and is where most modern card meanings come from; the readings above are modern interpretations built on it.
