4 FOUR OF CUPS

Four of Cups upright

Apathy and discontent. You are so focused on what is lacking that you miss what is being offered.

The Four of Cups is apathy and contemplation: withdrawing, feeling bored or dissatisfied, and missing an opportunity that is being offered. A cup is held out, but the figure does not see it.

Four of Cups reversed

Waking up to new possibilities and accepting help after a period of withdrawal.

Reversed, the fog lifts: new awareness, accepting an offer, or deciding to re-engage with life.

What Waite wrote in 1911

Upright
“Weariness, disgust, aversion, imaginary vexations, as if the wine of this world had caused satiety only; another wine, as if a fairy gift, is now offered the wastrel, but he sees no consolation therein. This is also a card of blended pleasure.”
Reversed
“Novelty, presage, new instruction, new relations.”
A. E. Waite, The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (London: William Rider & Son, 1911), Part III, § 2 — read the original text. Waite’s book accompanied the Rider deck and is where most modern card meanings come from; the readings above are modern interpretations built on it.

The image

What is on the card

A young man sits under a tree with arms crossed, staring at three cups on the grass. A hand from a cloud offers him a fourth cup, which he does not notice.

Four of Cups in love, work and health

Four of Cups in love

Upright, boredom in a relationship, or not noticing someone who is interested. Reversed, renewed interest or seeing a relationship with fresh eyes.

Four of Cups as feelings

They feel indifferent or distracted at the moment, and are not fully engaged.

Four of Cups in career and money

Disengagement at work, or turning down opportunities out of dissatisfaction. Look again at what is on offer.

Is the Four of Cups a yes or no card?

No — or not yet. It reads as a no whichever way up it lands. It has little company among the Cups, where only 3 of the 14 say no. It is the odd one out among the Fours: the Four of Wands says yes, while the Four of Swords and the Four of Pentacles say maybe.

Health: like every card of Cups, it points to emotional wellbeing and what you are carrying. The suit of Cups →
