6 SIX OF WANDS

Six of Wands upright

Public recognition and victory. Effort has been noticed, and confidence is justified.

The Six of Wands is victory and public recognition: success after effort, praise from others and confidence restored. The rider is crowned with laurels and cheered by the crowd.

Six of Wands reversed

Success without recognition, fear of failure, or pride that alienates the people who helped.

Reversed, recognition is missing or the ego takes over: a fall from grace, self-doubt, or success that goes to your head.

What Waite wrote in 1911

Upright
“The card has been so designed that it can cover several significations; on the surface, it is a victor triumphing, but it is also great news, such as might be carried in state by the King's courier; it is expectation crowned with its own desire, the crown of hope, and so forth.”
Reversed
“Apprehension, fear, as of a victorious enemy at the gate; treachery, disloyalty, as of gates being opened to the enemy; also indefinite delay.”
A. E. Waite, The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (London: William Rider & Son, 1911), Part III, § 2 — read the original text. Waite’s book accompanied the Rider deck and is where most modern card meanings come from; the readings above are modern interpretations built on it.
