The Hermit is deliberate withdrawal for the purpose of seeing clearly — not loneliness, which is withdrawal without a purpose. Mercury rules it, so what happens in the retreat is thinking rather than resting. In a matrix it lands most often on the ancestral position, taken from the month of birth, so it usually describes something the family already practised.
Thinks properly, at length, without needing company to do it. Reaches conclusions others arrive at years later, because the work happened without an audience to perform for. Excellent teacher once asked — the knowledge is real and organised.
The retreat becomes the residence. Solitude that started as method turns into avoidance, and the standards for who is worth talking to quietly rise until nobody qualifies. Second mode: knowledge hoarded, so the lamp gets held for nobody.
Needs unscheduled hours and a door that closes. Also needs one person who has full access — this arcana degrades without a single exception to its own solitude.
The task is coming back down with something usable. Where it lands: research, writing, analysis, craftsmanship, teaching, anything where the output is understanding rather than activity.
