Two birth dates are turned into two full matrices and compared position by position: character, ancestral task, talents, foundation, center and the four ancestral corners. Next to the result we show the base rate: how many positions two random people share anyway. Without it, one match looks meaningful when it is simply what usually happens.

How two matrices are compared: a worked example
Two people born on July 15, 1990 and March 2, 1992, calculated by the same code as the form above. Each of the nine positions is compared directly; the formula column shows how each point is built.

These two share none of the nine positions, against an average of 0.97 for random pairs — an ordinary result. Their centers, 10 and 7, add up and reduce to the pair arcana 17, The Star.
The Star follows the Tower, and that order is the whole point: it is the card of what you rebuild after something necessary collapses.
What the pair arcana is for
Practitioners read the pair arcana as the theme of the relationship itself — what the couple builds or works through together — rather than as a score. It changes only if one of the two centers changes, so it is best read alongside the individual centers, not instead of them. All 22 arcana →
What a match does and does not mean
The chart comes from the birth date alone, so everyone born on the same day has an identical matrix — and so do many people who were not. The day is reduced to the 22 arcana and the year to the sum of its digits, so March 5, 1990 and March 23, 1981 produce exactly the same nine points. A perfect match is a coincidence of arithmetic, not a sign.
Positions are not independent either: the foundation is built from the first three points and the center from all four, so a match on the early positions drags the later ones along. That is why we measured the baseline by brute force: a formula that treated the nine positions as independent would have got it wrong.
How many positions do two random charts share?
Most often, one. Across 15,400 pairs of birth dates, a single shared position is the most common outcome at 43.1%, sharing nothing comes next at 36.7%, and four or more matches turn up in just 1.7% of pairs.
