Computed from the actual motion

The nearest Saturn retrogrades either side of 1977

Previous

1976 Ended March 27, 1976 after 134 days, moving back 6.95° through the zodiac.

Next

1978 Begins December 24, 1978 and runs 136 days.

Both dates are computed from the planet’s apparent motion, not taken from a table. A retrograde begins the moment its daily movement against the stars turns negative, and that moment is findable to the hour.
