Where the custom comes from
Medieval medicine used the "zodiac man" to time bloodletting and surgery: physicians avoided treating a part of the body while the Moon was in its sign, and avoided the full Moon, when bleeding was believed to be heaviest. Copies of the figure appear in almanacs and physicians' handbooks across Europe.
How people follow it
Some patients still ask for elective procedures on a waning Moon, and for dental work to avoid the Moon in Aries or Taurus, the signs of the head and throat. The calendar below marks waning days away from full Moon.
