Where the custom comes from
The beauty calendar borrows two older ideas: the almanac rule that growth follows the waxing Moon, and the medieval "zodiac man", which assigned each sign to a part of the body from Aries at the head to Pisces at the feet. Treatments on a body part were avoided while the Moon passed through its sign.
How people follow it
Hair removal is booked on a waning Moon so that regrowth is supposedly slower; masks and oils on a waxing Moon so that they "take". Facial treatments are traditionally avoided while the Moon is in Aries, the sign of the head.
