The religious readings
Islamic tradition treats cats as clean animals and records the Prophet's fondness for them, so interpretive manuals in that tradition read the cat as a household member rather than a threat. European folklore ran the other way and tied cats to witchcraft, which is where the unlucky black cat comes from. The two readings contradict each other, which is the point worth keeping.
