Dreaming about cats is traditionally read as independence, and what it costs. Cats in dreams tend to appear when a relationship is being negotiated rather than settled. No survey has counted how often it occurs; in searches, the detail people add most often is “black”.

Cat dreams appear where affection and control are getting confused: a relationship being negotiated, a child growing independent, a friendship where one person sets the terms. Unlike dog dreams, the animal here rarely obeys, and that is the whole content.
What has been counted. One of the three most frequent dream animals alongside dogs and horses — Schredl & Blagrove, 2021, n = 4,849. About a fifth of animals in dreams are the dreamer's own pets, which is worth ruling out before reading symbolism into a familiar cat.

A cat that will not come is the common form. Aggression from a cat is rarer and reads differently from a dog's — as withdrawal weaponised rather than trust broken.
A cat attacking or scratching you
Usually follows an approach that was unwanted rather than an act of malice. Dreamers often report reaching for the cat first, which is the detail the dream is built around.
A black cat
Carries superstition rather than meaning, and the superstition is not even consistent: unlucky in much of Europe and North America, lucky in Britain and Japan. The dream tends to borrow whichever belief you grew up with.
A dead cat
Reads as autonomy lost rather than a person lost — a relationship that has stopped being freely given. It is reported as sad rather than frightening.
Kittens
Shifts the symbol from independence to dependence, and commonly follows taking responsibility for something that needs constant small attention.

Roughly one search in three about dreaming of cats names a particular version, and 59 different details turn up. The commonest is “black” at 28.2%, ahead of “white” at 27.6%.
Cat dreams by color and behavior
Color and behavior change the reading as much as an attack does. A white or ginger cat, one purring on you, one that talks or waits at the door each carry their own version.
A white cat
White cats are read as a quieter, gentler version of the cat symbol: intuition, a calm presence or a new, tentative trust. In folklore a white cat is lucky in some places and unlucky in others, so the feeling of the dream decides it.
A ginger or tabby cat
Warm-colored, ordinary cats tend to stand for everyday comfort and home life. Dreaming of one often coincides with thinking about routine, family or a pet you once had.
A cat purring or sleeping on you
Contentment and closeness on your own terms. It commonly appears when you feel accepted without having to try — or when you want that from someone.
A cat talking to you
Talking animals in dreams usually voice a thought you have not said out loud yourself. What the cat says is often closer to your own intuition than to any message from outside.
A cat at the door or wanting to come in
Something asking to be let in: a person, a feeling or an opportunity you have kept at a distance. Opening the door in the dream tends to reflect readiness; keeping it shut, caution.
A sick or injured cat
Concern for your independence, creativity or a vulnerable person in your care. It is common during stress, when the part of you that normally looks after itself feels worn down.
A cat bringing you a mouse or a bird
An unwanted gift: something offered with good intentions that you do not know what to do with. Real cats do this, and the dream borrows the awkwardness.

Like other American dream books of its time, Fontaine read dreams as omens and attached lottery numbers to them; under “Cats” it printed 54, 42, 16. Today’s dream dictionaries still echo readings like this one.
What the traditions claim
The religious readings
Islamic tradition treats cats as clean animals and records the Prophet's fondness for them, so interpretive manuals in that tradition read the cat as a household member rather than a threat. European folklore ran the other way and tied cats to witchcraft, which is where the unlucky black cat comes from. The two readings contradict each other, which is the point worth keeping.
