A bear with cubs is a distinct variant, reading as protectiveness rather than threat. Being chased by a bear without being caught belongs with the chase dreams, the most common theme in the standard survey.
A bear attacking
The most common form. It follows situations where restraint ended abruptly, and dreamers usually report surprise rather than terror.
A black bear
Smaller, more avoidant, and far more likely to leave you alone than the reputation suggests. Dreams that distinguish black from brown tend to be about proportion: how big is this really?
A polar bear
