Reality testing lucid dreaming technique

The Reality testing lucid dreaming technique — Reality checks through the day — several times a day, genuinely ask whether you are dreaming and test it — read text twice, look at your hands, check a clock. In dreams text tends to shift and clocks misbehave.

How to do Reality testing, step by step

  1. Choose one or two checks that behave differently in dreams: reading a line of text twice, looking at your hands, or pinching your nose and trying to breathe.
  2. Several times a day — many people aim for around ten — stop and genuinely ask whether you are dreaming before doing the check.
  3. Look around for anything strange while you do it; the question matters more than the mechanical test.
  4. Tie checks to triggers that often appear in your dreams, such as doors, phones or seeing a particular person.
  5. If a check ever fails — text changes, you can breathe through a pinched nose — treat it as proof that you are dreaming.

Where it usually goes wrong

Doing checks on autopilot. A habit performed without real doubt carries into the dream as the same automatic gesture, and the dream simply supplies a normal result.

How long it takes

In the 2017 Australian study, reality testing on its own did not raise lucid dream rates meaningfully over a week; its value showed when combined with WBTB and MILD.

What to combine it with

Reality testing is the daytime half of a routine whose night-time half is MILD or SSILD after a WBTB waking.

Who it suits

Everyone, as a foundation — it costs nothing, needs no night waking and improves awareness of dream signs over time.

What the evidence says

On its own the effect is small. Its value is in feeding MILD: the habit of questioning your state carries into the dream, where the check fails and the failure is the cue.

Context for that number: only 23% of people have a lucid dream in a given month at all, and 55% have ever had one. So a technique landing anywhere in double digits per night is doing something real — and is still not the switch these methods are usually sold as.
