Dreaming about falling is traditionally read as loss of footing, literal or otherwise. It is one of the few dreams anyone has counted: in the standard survey of typical dreams, 73.8% of 1,181 students had dreamt it, the 3rd most common of 55 themes.

What research shows
Many falling dreams happen at the edge of sleep, where a hypnic jerk — a sudden muscle twitch as the body drifts off — arrives with a sensation of dropping, and the dream is built around it. In the 2003 survey falling was also one of three themes students most often named as the first typical dream they could remember, with being chased and flying.
The psychological reading
In later sleep, falling tends to accompany situations where support has been withdrawn: a job, a relationship, a certainty.

When it turns up
Falling is the dream least likely to be symbolic, because much of the time it has a physical cause: a hypnic jerk as you drop into sleep, with the dream built backwards around the sensation. Where it arrives later in the night, it follows situations where support was withdrawn — a job, a person, a certainty.
Measured, not guessed
Third most common of the 55 themes, behind being chased (81.5%) and sexual experiences (76.5%). A separate item, “being on the verge of falling”, scored 57.7%.
It sits 49.4 points above the median theme, which 24.4% of students had dreamt.
The version matters
Almost always a hypnic jerk. The muscle contraction comes first and the dream is assembled in the moment to explain it, which is why the fall is so short.
Reported as strange rather than frightening, and sometimes as pleasant. It reads as surrender rather than danger.
Shifts the whole dream from loss of footing to loss of agency. It follows decisions made about you rather than by you.
Common enough to bury the old superstition that you die if you hit the ground. Dreamers report the landing as anticlimactic.
Height tends to track stakes rather than distance. The higher versions are reported around decisions with public consequences.
Powerlessness rather than fear. Frequently reported by people close to someone whose situation is deteriorating.

Commonly claimed, and wrong
Falling does not warn of a coming failure, and the claim that dying in a dream kills you in your sleep is a myth with no mechanism behind it. If falling dreams arrive nightly with gasping or waking breathless, the question is medical rather than symbolic.
