“If any one should be so unfortunate as to dream that he or she was present at a happy and jolly wedding, it denotes that they will attend a funeral; it will not necessarily be at the burial of either of the persons you dreamed you saw married, but you will undoubtedly be called to mourn some friend or relative. To dream of being married yourself, foretells your death.”

Like other American dream books of its time, Fontaine read dreams as omens and attached lottery numbers to them; under “Marriage” it printed 2, 78, 42. Today’s dream dictionaries still echo readings like this one.

Classical Islamic interpretation is where most of the marriage-dream material comes from, and it is not uniformly positive: manuals in that tradition read some marriage dreams as union and others as burden, decided by the state of the dreamer. Christian folk reading has usually treated the wedding dream as an omen of its opposite. Both are interpretive conventions rather than evidence.
