Dreaming about teeth falling out is traditionally read as loss of control, or anxiety about how you are perceived. It is one of the few dreams anyone has counted: in the standard survey of typical dreams, 18.8% of 1,181 students had dreamt it, the 38th most common of 55 themes.

What research shows
A 2018 study at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev found a statistical association with dental irritation during sleep — teeth grinding, in other words, rather than symbolism. In the 2003 typical-dreams survey, students first remembered having this dream at 9.7 years old on average, later than most typical dreams.
The psychological reading
Where there is no grinding, the usual reading is exposure: teeth are what you show when you speak or smile, so losing them maps onto fear of humiliation, aging, or saying something you cannot take back.
What tradition claimed
Older dream books read it as a death in the family. There is no reason to take that seriously, and it causes needless distress.

This one shows up around situations where something visible is failing and cannot be quietly fixed: a presentation that went badly, aging, money trouble that others can see. The version matters
The version people ask about most, and it maps onto several things going wrong at the same time rather than one large thing. Dreamers describe the scale as the frightening part, not the pain.
The classic form. Holding them tends to follow a specific embarrassment you are still turning over — the evidence is in your hand and cannot be put back.
Front teeth are what other people see. This variant concentrates the reading on appearance and reputation rather than capability.
Crumbling is reported during long stretches of stress with no single cause, where clean loss follows one identifiable event. The texture of the dream carries that difference.
Adds agency: the loss is being done by you rather than to you. It often follows a decision to say something that cost you something.
Recurrence is common with this theme and does not mean the situation is worsening. Where it arrives with jaw pain or headaches, treat it as a bruxism question and ask a dentist before an interpreter.

Most people look up the dream of teeth falling out itself; only 1.9% of searches add a detail, 24 different ones in all. The commonest is “in Islam” at 49.8%, ahead of “recurring” at 11.7%.

What the traditions claim
Classical Islamic interpretation reads falling teeth as concerning the family, with upper teeth for male relatives and lower for female, and long life where teeth fall without pain. Some Christian folk readings tie the dream to a death in the family. Neither has any evidential support, and the death reading in particular has frightened a lot of people for no reason.

Commonly claimed, and wrong
It does not predict a death, a pregnancy or money coming in. The money claim is a modern invention that rides on the tooth fairy; the death claim is old and harmful. Large surveys find teeth dreams in people whose lives are entirely uneventful.
