What a dream book said in 1862

The Golden Wheel Dream-Book, under “Laughter”
“This omen is unfavorable, and is a sign of tears; it also denotes that you will be worsted by your business engagements; if a lover dreams he sees his sweetheart laugh, it is a sign she will jilt him for a stranger; to the married it signifies domestic trouble.”
Felix Fontaine, The Golden Wheel Dream-Book and Fortune-Teller (New York: Dick & Fitzgerald, 1862) — read the original text. Like other American dream books of its time, Fontaine read dreams as omens and attached lottery numbers to them; under “Laughter” it printed 40. Today’s dream dictionaries still echo readings like this one.
