Why this dream arrives when it does
Pregnancy dreams arrive during long waits with no visible progress: a manuscript, an application, a decision made but not announced. In actual pregnancy the dreams intensify and turn vivid, which is a sleep effect — hormonal change and frequent waking produce more recalled dreaming, not more meaningful dreaming.

The single most common version. The test is confirmation rather than the event, so it tends to follow moments where something you suspected about your own life became undeniable.
Being pregnant and hiding it
Maps closely onto plans not yet announced, where the hiding has started to cost something. Dreamers usually report the concealment as the difficult part, not the pregnancy.
Someone else being pregnant
More often about noticing growth in another person than about envy, though the feeling in the dream settles which. Frequently reported by people watching a friend change faster than they are.
Giving birth
Reads as release rather than arrival: the thing finally becomes visible and stops being yours alone. It commonly follows deadlines and launches.
Being pregnant as a man, or past childbearing age
Common enough to rule out the literal reading entirely. The dream is using the clearest picture the mind has for something developing out of sight.
Losing the pregnancy
Distressing and frequently reported, and not predictive. It usually follows a project or plan that stalled, and in people who have had a real loss it belongs with grief rather than symbolism.

“For a woman to dream that she is pregnant when she is not, is a sign of some special good fortune; she will either have a handsome present, or else her husband will be lucky in some business transaction and give her a part of the money: if a girl dreams this, it foretells that she will get married about as sudden as if the dream were a reality.”
