Different ways this dream shows up

Being bitten differs from watching. Watching a spider work is often read as neutral or even pleasant, whatever the waking phobia.

A giant spider

Size in dreams tracks how much attention the thing is taking, not how dangerous it is. A giant spider usually follows a small problem that has been thought about far more than it deserves.

Black spiders

Color mostly changes the fear level rather than the meaning. Dreamers describe black spiders as harder to track against the background, which is closer to what the dream is about than the color itself.

Spiders everywhere, or in the bed

The version people describe as the most distressing. Where it recurs with a sense of being unable to move, the likelier explanation is a hypnagogic hallucination during sleep paralysis rather than symbolism.

Spiders crawling on you

Contact turns a watched thing into a felt one. It tends to follow situations where something you had kept at a distance started touching daily life — a debt becoming a call, a rumor reaching your desk.

What a dream book said in 1862

The Golden Wheel Dream-Book, under “Spider”
“To dream that you see a spider coming toward you, is a sign that some one will soon pay you money: if you imagine that the spider spins down before your face, the omen is similar, for you will make a good lot of money in some way. If a married woman dreams of seeing a large spider, it foretells that she will have a miscarriage, which she will not be sorry for.”

Like other American dream books of its time, Fontaine read dreams as omens and attached lottery numbers to them; under “Spider” it printed 72, 16. Today’s dream dictionaries still echo readings like this one.

What the traditions claim

The religious readings

Biblical references to spiders are about fragility, not menace: Job 8:14 compares false confidence to a spider web, and Isaiah 59:5 uses webs for schemes that cannot hold. Islamic tradition preserves the story of the spider web at the cave of Thawr, which makes the spider a protective figure there. Neither tradition treats the dream as a warning about a person.

A spider dream is not a sign of a female enemy, which is the most repeated claim on the internet and has no basis in either the research or the older interpretive traditions. It is also not a money omen; that reading comes from confusing spiders with the separate folk belief about money spiders.
