“To dream that you are pleased with the chattering of one of these birds, is a sign that some deceitful person will flatter you: if an engaged young girl has such a dream, she should look sharp to the antecedents of her lover before marriage, as it is ten to one that he is not worthy of her confidence: the dream may, however, point to some other flatterer.”

Like other American dream books of its time, Fontaine read dreams as omens and attached lottery numbers to them; under “Parrot” it printed 15, 2, 33. Today’s dream dictionaries still echo readings like this one.
