The basics

What the Third Eye chakra is

The Third Eye chakra is about insight and perception: seeing a situation clearly, noticing patterns and trusting intuition alongside reason. It is the system's place for imagination and for the ability to step back and see the bigger picture. Tradition reads both overthinking and a refusal to look at what is obvious as third-eye imbalances.

Ajna means "command" or "perceive" — in yogic texts the point where a teacher's guidance is received.

SymbolA lotus with just two petals, white or indigo, around a circle, often with the syllable OM inside. It has no element in the classical scheme of five.
In the bodyTraditionally linked to the point between the eyebrows, the eyes and the brain; modern writers add the pituitary and pineal glands.

A short practice

Sit for five minutes with your attention resting between the eyebrows, then write down the first thing you notice about a problem you are stuck on. Meditation and limiting screen time before sleep are the classic suggestions.

Affirmations

  • I see clearly.
  • I trust what I notice.
  • I can hold intuition and reason together.

Blocked, balanced, overactive

Most guides describe only two states. Modern chakra writing usually adds a third — a chakra can be read as too open as easily as too closed, and the signs look nothing alike.

Blocked

Overthinking, or dismissing what you noticed because you cannot justify it.

Balanced

Trusts its own read of a situation without needing it confirmed.

Overactive

Living in the head, spiritual bypassing, mistaking imagination for perception.

What is traditionally suggested

Practice

Sitting still without input for ten minutes. No phone, no music.

Movement and yoga

Forehead grounded in a forward fold, alternate nostril breathing.

Food and color

Dark berries, cacao, anything deep purple.

Worth being plain: none of this has been shown to affect anything measurable. What it reliably does is give you a reason to move, eat deliberately and sit still — and those three do have evidence behind them, whatever the framing.
