The moon is always at a distance in dreams: observed, never reached. It arrives around things you watch and do not touch — someone else's life, a phase you are waiting out, a cycle you can track but not hurry.
The version matters
Different ways this dream shows up
A moon that is too large or the wrong color is a common variant — about 30% of dream imagery carries an impossible feature of this kind.
A full moon
The most common version. Dreamers report its size and brightness, and often a sense of significance with no content attached.
The moon unusually large or close
Dream physics, and reported as awe or dread depending on the week. It reads as something distant becoming pressing.
Two moons, or the wrong sky
A common marker that the dream is not real, and lucid dreamers use exactly this kind of detail as a check.
A blood or red moon
Lunar eclipses are real and predictable, and the apocalyptic readings attached to them are not. Dreamers usually bring the association with them.
Moonlight on water
Reported as calming, and one of the more frequently recalled pleasant images.
A missing moon
Absence noticed. It clusters around losing a reference point you used to navigate by.

Roughly one search in three about dreaming of the moon names a particular version, and 12 different details turn up. More than half of them name “full”: 50.4%.

What a dream book said in 1862
“To dream of a sharp new moon with horns pointing upwards is a sign you will be rich: if the horns point sideways or downward, it foretells poverty: seeing a full moon in your dream denotes a thrifty and happy marriage: a half moon shadows forth the loss of a wife or husband by death or desertion. Dreaming of seeing a half moon is fatal to the prospects of lovers.”

Like other American dream books of its time, Fontaine read dreams as omens and attached lottery numbers to them; under “Moon” it printed 19, 18. Today’s dream dictionaries still echo readings like this one.

Moon phases do not affect dreams in any way that has held up. Studies looking for a lunar effect on sleep have produced small and inconsistent results, and nothing supports the full moon changing what you dream about.
