The Golden Wheel Dream-Book, under “Lake”
“If you dream of sailing on a smooth and clear lake, it foreshadows success in all your undertakings; if the lake is rough, but yet has clear water, the sign still holds good, though you will encounter difficulties; if it is muddy water, it denotes sickness, and losses through dishonest people about you.”
Felix Fontaine, The Golden Wheel Dream-Book and Fortune-Teller (New York: Dick & Fitzgerald, 1862) — read the original text. Like other American dream books of its time, Fontaine read dreams as omens and attached lottery numbers to them; under “Lake” it printed 49, 17. Today’s dream dictionaries still echo readings like this one.
