Crystals for sleep

The stones traditionally chosen for winding down and resting properly — with what each one actually is.

Amethyst

Traditionally associated with clear thinking, restraint and calm; the classic stone of sobriety.

Composition Silicon dioxide (SiO₂) — quartz coloured by iron and natural irradiation
Hardness · Chakra 7 · Third Eye, Crown

Amethyst fades in sunlight. Heat it and it turns yellow — most commercial citrine is heat-treated amethyst.

Moonstone

Traditionally linked to intuition, cycles and new beginnings.

Composition Potassium aluminium silicate (KAlSi₃O₈) — feldspar
Hardness · Chakra 6–6.5 · Sacral, Third Eye

The floating blue glow is adularescence — light scattering between microscopic layers of two feldspars, not an inclusion or a coating.

Selenite

Traditionally used for clearing a space and resetting other stones.

Composition Hydrated calcium sulphate (CaSO₄·2H₂O) — crystalline gypsum
Hardness · Chakra 2 · Crown

Water-soluble — never rinse it. The Cave of Crystals in Naica holds selenite beams over eleven metres long, the largest natural crystals ever found.

Zircon

Traditionally associated with grounding and restful sleep.

Composition Zirconium silicate (ZrSiO₄)
Hardness · Chakra 6–7.5 · Root, Crown

Not to be confused with cubic zirconia, a synthetic diamond simulant. Natural zircon has high dispersion and real geological age.

Smoky Quartz

Traditionally associated with settling anxiety and staying present.

Composition Silicon dioxide (SiO₂) darkened by natural irradiation of aluminium impurities
Hardness · Chakra 7 · Root

Its colour comes from natural radiation acting on aluminium traces over geological time — heat it and the smoke disappears.

What a stone can and cannot do

No crystal treats a medical or psychological condition, and nothing on this page should replace advice from someone qualified to give it. What a stone can do is act as a physical reminder — an object in your pocket attached to an intention you set deliberately. That is not nothing, and it is also not magic.
