Viola odorata, the sweet violet, native to Europe and Asia. Its scent contains ionones, compounds that briefly switch off the smell receptors that detect them — which is why violets seem to lose their fragrance and then regain it moments later.
Why it belongs to February
Violets were a symbol of Athens in antiquity and a personal emblem of Napoleon, whose supporters wore them after his exile. "Shrinking violet" comes from the plant's habit of hiding its flowers among the leaves.
Meaning by color
Purple for faithfulness, white for innocence and taking a chance on happiness, blue for loyalty.
Keeping it
Sweet violets prefer partial shade and moist soil, and they spread by runners. The flowers are edible and have been candied for centuries.

In Britain, April 19 is Primrose Day, marking the death of Benjamin Disraeli, whose favorite flower it was said to be. Victorian flower dictionaries gave it to young love and to the feeling of not being able to live without someone.

Primroses like cool, damp, lightly shaded ground and can be divided after flowering to make more plants.

Some primulas — the indoor Primula obconica in particular — can irritate the skin when handled.
