The plant
Narcissus pseudonarcissus and its many cultivated forms: a trumpet or cup surrounded by six petal-like tepals, one flower to a stem. The bulbs multiply underground and can flower for decades in the same spot.
Why it belongs to March
The daffodil is a national emblem of Wales and is worn on St David's Day, March 1. It is also the symbol of cancer charities on both sides of the Atlantic, including Marie Curie in the UK and the American Cancer Society.
Meaning by color
Yellow for new beginnings and cheerfulness. Tradition says a single daffodil foretells misfortune and a bunch brings joy — one reason they are usually given in quantity.
Keeping it
Freshly cut daffodils release a sap that shortens the life of other flowers. Stand them in water on their own for a few hours before mixing them into a bouquet, and do not recut the stems afterward.
Safety
All parts are toxic, the bulbs most of all; they are dangerous to cats and dogs and have been mistaken for onions in kitchens.

The plant
Narcissus jonquilla, native to Spain and Portugal, with narrow rush-like leaves and several small, intensely scented flowers on each stem. In the American South "jonquil" is often used loosely for any daffodil.
Why it belongs to March
Jonquils were grown for perfume in southern France, and Victorian flower lists gave them to desire and to the wish that affection be returned.
Keeping it
They need a warm, sunny position and a dry summer rest to flower well the following year.
Safety
As toxic as any other narcissus — keep bulbs and cut stems away from pets.

A March bouquet of daffodils should be generous rather than a single stem. For someone with pets, a bunch of cut tulips in yellow gives the same look with less risk.
