In most European versions the left hand is the paying hand, the one that hands money over, so an itch there was read as money about to leave. The belief came with a remedy: rub the palm on wood, or put the hand in a pocket, and the money is supposed to stay where it is.

The versions people follow

What exactly is believed

Money leaving

The left hand pays, so an itch there warns of a bill, a loss or an unexpected expense.

Luck for women

Some Hindu traditions read the left side as lucky for women, making an itchy left palm a sign of money arriving.

Caribbean reversal

In parts of the Caribbean the left palm is the receiving hand, and an itch there means money is on its way.

Don't scratch it

Scratching the itch is said to scratch the money away; rubbing it on wood is safer.

How the bad luck is traditionally undone

Rub the palm on something wooden, put the hand in a pocket or close it into a fist to hold the money in.

Where it lives today

It is mostly told as a light-hearted warning before a payday or a shopping trip.

What people say

An itchy left palm means money is about to go out — a bill, a loss or an unexpected expense — unless you rub it on wood.

What is going on

Itching in one palm usually comes from something that hand touched: soap, cleaning products, a new glove or plant sap. Dyshidrotic eczema, which starts as tiny itchy blisters on the palm and the sides of the fingers, is another common cause and is worth showing to a doctor if it keeps returning.

Where it applies. The meaning flips in several places: in parts of the Caribbean the left palm is the one that brings money, and some Hindu traditions read the sides by gender, making the left palm lucky for women.

Nearest in age

Itchy left palm is joint 15th oldest of the 45 dated superstitions here. Of those, 3 date from 1900 or later and 14 predate the common era.

First-recorded dates are the earliest documented appearance in written sources, not the earliest possible origin — an unrecorded practice can be older. How the dating works and where it is uncertain →
